Course Description
In this course, you will create original music using Logic Pro on your school-provided MacBook Air. This is a production-first class, which means you will begin making music right away. You will not spend weeks only learning software before creating. Instead, you will learn Logic Pro tools as you need them to build, revise, mix, and finish your own tracks. Throughout the year, you will work like a developing music producer. You will create short musical ideas, shape them into stronger arrangements, record audio and MIDI, build beats, use drums and bass parts, explore chords and song form, sample and remix sounds, edit timing and pitch, mix your tracks, master your final audio, and present your work in a final portfolio. Live class will be used for instruction, Logic Pro demonstrations, listening examples, feedback, troubleshooting, and critique. Your production work will be completed independently during the week and submitted by the end of each week. Because this is a production-based course, students should be ready to create consistently, revise their work, and share music for feedback. Each assignment includes three levels of work: Level 1: Technical Move You will practice the Logic Pro skill demonstrated in class. Level 2: Apply It to Your Track You will use that skill in your own current production. Level 3: Producer Challenge You will push your track further through creative choices such as custom sounds, recording, arrangement changes, sampling, automation, reference-track comparison, or mix polish. By the end of the course, you will have a portfolio of original music that shows your growth as a producer. Your work will demonstrate technical skill, creativity, revision, reflection, and your own developing musical identity. What You Will LearnYou will learn how to create and organize Logic Pro projects; build original musical ideas from loops, software instruments, MIDI, samples, and recordings; edit regions and arrange sections; use plug-ins and effects; record audio and MIDI; build drum, bass, and keyboard parts; create chord progressions and song forms; program beats; use sampling and remix techniques ethically; edit timing and pitch; mix, master, and export finished tracks; give and receive feedback; and present your final production portfolio. Major ProjectsDuring the year, you will complete several production projects, including a first original track sprint, an arrangement and sound design production, a rhythm-section production with a recorded element, a Semester 1 portfolio track, an original beat or beat-based song section, a sample-based remix or transformation project, a mix/master before-and-after project, and a final capstone production and showcase. What You Will SubmitMost weekly assignments will include an audio bounce, Logic Pro evidence such as a project file or screenshot, and a short producer note explaining what you made, what you changed, and what feedback you need. Who This Course Is ForThis course is designed for students who are serious about making music and willing to work independently outside of live class. You do not need to be an expert producer already, but you should be ready to create, experiment, revise, and share your work. The goal is not just to learn Logic Pro. The goal is to use Logic Pro to make original music that sounds like you. |
